Tiny, Featherweight (at 40gram) and LOADED with Tech! We are dynamo superusers at Grave and Tour and when we saw the features in the D2 Pro R3 Dynamo Charger we were super excited. The Auto-Reconnect technology used by Igaro-UK is a feature we’ve often dreamed about, but never before has it been available. The Igaro D2 Pro R3 is a dynamo hub USB power converter that offers superior performance and features a miniature form-factor. Use the Igaro D2 Pro R3 with any STVZO 3W dynamo hub and charge your USB devices on your next Munga / Freedom Challenge RASA /  Audax / Randonneuring challenge, around-the-world tour or commute to work. The Igaro D2 has two USB-C ports with Igaro’s auto-reconnect technology for enhanced power delivery. It also introduces maximum power point tracking for superior output with lower hub drag. Blue and red lights indicate the status of each USB-C port including how much power a connected USB device is consuming. With an all metal body and IP69 waterproof rating (keep the USB ports dry – all USB ports corrode when wet), the Igaro D2 Pro R3 is made for long-term use. It works at any speed, generates no heat and comes with a 5 year international warranty.

Dynamo Light Detection

Automatic behaviour switching.

Upon motion detection the system will assess whether a dynamo light is active. Generally dynamo hubs don’t have the power to run a high-power light and charge at the same time however the handling of the condition is product specific (see its manual page for details).

Super Capacitors

Long lasting and efficient storage.

Super capacitors store a fraction of the power of equivalent sized li-ion batteries, however they last 1,000x longer, are 5% more efficient and work great in the cold. They’re ideal for soaking up the variable power output from a dynamo hub. Where utilized in our products we include deep-discharge support to maximize storage capacity.

USB Auto Reconnect

Optimizing USB power consumption.

Most USB devices are designed for fixed power sources such as wall socket adapters. As dynamo power varies they may lock into lower power consuming modes and not recover. With auto-reconnect, this situation is detected and the USB device is momentarily disconnected and reconnected. Should the operation fail it won’t occur again. Our auto-reconnect uses 500mA (USBv2), 900mA(USBv3) and 1.5A (USB-C CC) current bands.

USB Auto Transfer

Pushing excess internal storage outbound.

When the system detects it is at or near full capacity it enables a secondary USB port to drain power into a device such as a power-bank. This technique is only for products that have internal batteries or super-capacitors.

USB Auto Switching

Smart power handling.

Dynamo power rarely is enough to charge two devices simultaneously. Instead when a period of stable motion and a charged first device is detected a second USB device is allowed to charge. If the first begins charging again the second is disconnected. This technique is typically only for products without batteries or super-capacitors.

Critical Fault Protection

Protecting output devices from any failure.

In the very unlikely event that a critical fault occurs the system will fail in such a way that the output device can never be supplied with a voltage outside of the USB specification. This prevents cascading failure making its way to any attached output device.

Active Rectification

Diodeless for increased efficiency.

Active rectification uses electronic switches to mimic diodes and results in greater efficiency especially at low speeds. Efficiency gains of 5-10% are typical.

Reactance Tuning

Extracting more power from the hub.

A dynamo hub uses magnets to generate power and in doing so exhibits a parasitic property called reactance. A method allows for minimizing this for a specific range of speed (roughly +/- 5kph) yielding greater power of typically 25-30%. Some Igaro products use multiple points to enhance over a wider range in speed (see a products specification page).

Heatless Overspeed

Handling power extremes.

With a high enough speed a dynamo hub can output 100V AC. Attempting to cater for this high voltage usually means low efficiency at nominal voltage levels. A common method is to burn the excess power of as heat, but this introduces reliability concerns. Our method is heatless, maximises low speed efficiency and doesn’t impose a high speed restriction.

Synchronous Regulation

Higher efficiency across the range.

Switching power regulation uses digital switches to rapidly regulate a voltage level. We use full synchronous regulation (two switches, not one) for efficiency ratings of up to 96%, and also feature a light-load efficiency mode for when output devices aren’t attached.

Maximum Power Point Tracking

Balanced input/output power for superior transfer.

Dynamo hubs are a high impedence power source meaning they have an optimal point at which they supply the most power. An output load beyond this point will result in less power. USB devices don’t know the optimal value and frequently overload the optimal point resulting in reduced power transfer. MPPT forces the output to match the input.

The MPPT point is a complex mathmatical calculation with speed being one variable and dynamo hub characteristics being another. Where an Igaro product features non-selectable MPPT it will be tuned for the Schmidt SON28 dynamo hub but will work well with similar hubs. Some products may allow the dynamo hub model to be selected.

Micro Control Unit (MCU)

Combining processing and peripherals.

MCU’s are used to provide logic, timing and computation and use instructions made by custom programming. MCU’s make our products smaller, more dynamic and more power efficient. All our programming is performed by us which ensures software quality matches hardware quality.

 

Performance

Full USB charging from 13kph.

Power starts from just 7kph and most devices will charge from 10kph. More power is available as speed increases.

Full charging is 0.5A for USBv2. Output measured using our automated test-rig (SON 28 QR dynamo).

 

Integrate

To best suit you and your bike.

Igaro D2 produces no heat and can be placed in a bag. Alternatively there’s an optional aluminium handlebar bracket or 3d printed options including an under-stem mount.

Warranty:
Igaro warranties the Igaro D2 Pro R3 to be free from defect for a period of 5 years from date of purchase. Warranty is non-transferrable and does not include corrosion to USB ports due to water ingression, genereal wear and tear, or damage due to user error or mechanical force.
